Saudi Tornados at RAF Lossiemouth:

Another smashing deployment in the UK

Are the British being spoiled with hosting probably the two best deployments in Europe this year? In June the Indians invaded RAF Waddington and stole our hearts with their beautiful Flankers. In August Lossiemouth was in turn to host a contingent of 8 Saudi Arabian Tornados. I think most of the western European enthusiasts are being spoiled as most of them traveled to the UK twice not to miss this great hardware!

Afterburner was fortunate enough to see both deployments in action. On this page, we’ll tell you about the Saudi Tornados from 75 sqn. We traveled separately this time. One of us was spending  the family holidays in Scotland (and what a place to do so!!) while the other flew in by Ryan Air from Niederrhein to Prestwick.

When we saw the first desert Tornados taxiing out, the weather wasn’t too good, mostly cloudy and even  some drizzle. In the morning wave 6 Saudis took the sky, not a bad number! As the wind was favourable for runway 28, all RAF Tonkas used this runway. Ruway 28 is too short for the inexperienced Saudis at Lossie so they had to use the much longer runway 23, despite the major cross-wind. While the last ones entered the runway the sun came out and nicely lit up the desert camo.

One hour and some fifteen minutes later the aircraft returned. Some of them had really funny ways of approaching the field. No clue in which book these arrival procedures had been published. Standing on an old concrete bunker we had a great place to photograph them while landing. The weather was still cloudy but dry this time.

Before we went to Scotland we already studied the excellent airfield directions published at the Scramble website. It provided a good insight of all the photographic opportunities around RAF Lossiemouth. We decided to find a different point to take pictures of the departures in the afternoon wave. A position was chosen near the end of runway 23, where the aircraft lifted off. Since it was still very cloudy, this was a bit of a challenge as the aircraft pass at high speeds but most of the results turned out ok. Also the local based Tonkas used this runway in the afternoon, so this resulted in some extra fun!

To obtain an even larger variety of images, we decided to await the returning aircraft all the way at the runway end of 23, where they leave and taxi back to their parking spot. This was a less fortunate choice; only the RAF ones rolled out to the end, the Saudis left the runway earlier. Hey, you can’t have it all. Considering the weather conditions we were very pleased at the end of the day!
