25
years Alpha Jet operations
It
is twentyfive years now that the Belgian Air Force is operating the
Alpha Jet E now. To celebrate this and the graduation of new pilots
promotion, the 1st wing invited traing aircraft from a large variety of
NATO training squadrons. The Belgian Air Force was keen enough to invite
aircraft spotters and other enthusiasts as well for this occasion!
Of course not every training squadron is able to show up for such an
event, either by other commitments or just a lack of interest for this.
The list of invitations was impressive and you'll always have to wait
and see what shows up. One of the best were coming from Ala 23, Talavera
air base Spain: two updated F-5B+ aircraft. They are a very rare sight
outside Spain and so for the enthusiast a very welcome guest.
Other
interesting participants among others were 2 Italian SF-260s, 2 Italian
MB-339CDs, 2 French Alpha Jets (one from Cazaux and one from Tours), 2
French TB-30s, a brand new Irish PC-9, 2 Royal Air Force Tucano's, a
Czech
L-159, a Danish Saab T-17 and a French Mirage F.1B foreseen from WWII
invasion stripes.
Of
course the Belgians brought everything they use for pilot training, such
as the based Fouga Magister, SF-260 and Alpha Jet (1 in extremely nice
colour scheme!). In addition to this there was an F-16B and and from the
Belgian Army several A109s, an Alouette II and a BN-2A Islander. Some of
the main non-showers were Greece (TA-7), Turkey (F-5B), Sweden (Sk37)
and several eastern European L-39 users.
From
the spotters point of view we think this was a well organized event.
Special areas had been created with very good photo opportunities. The
day started off with clear skies but in the course of the morning clouds
developped to scattered to broken. This resulted in some aircraft
without sun on the picture. Several participants arrived much later than
expected. The crowd was instructed to leave the base at 16.00 hours but
the organisation even allowed us to wait for the last arrivals around
17.00 hours. Our compliments for this event, well worth the 20 euro fee!
